Adults keep developing. Almost nobody is told how.

Growing up does not stop at the end of adolescence. It just stops being scheduled, and most people have never seen a map of what comes next.

The stage models all describe the same movement from different angles: something that was you becomes something you can look at. Your beliefs stop being the lens and become an object you can hold. Kegan calls that the subject-object move; Spiral Dynamics tracks it as a sequence of worldviews; ego development scores it in sentence completion; moral development watches the circle of care widen. Four instruments, one underlying passage.

Knowing this is not academic. The way a conversation goes wrong between two people at different altitudes is entirely predictable, and so is the specific kind of arrogance each stage produces. So is the disorientation of arriving somewhere new and finding that your old community can no longer follow the reasoning — which is one of the most common and least-named griefs in adult life.
