Haute Lumière · The Reader
Begin reading
You do not need an account to read. Open the Reader and start — the quarterly is free, permanently, to everyone, and it works with the network cable pulled.
Signing up is for the things a stranger cannot simply take: the schools, the journal that follows you between devices, and the Circle. It is one field, it goes to a machine we own, and a person answers it.
- To read now
- Nothing. Open it.
- To be written to
- One address, below
- Where it goes
- Our own database. No third party, no tracker.
- What we never ask
- A password, a phone number, a card
Part I
What you get, at each tier
Three tiers, and the first one is the important one.
Everyone
The Archive
Every Haute Lumière issue, free, permanently, with no account. It works on a fresh install with nothing signed in. This is not a trial.
Purchased
A title is a file
A book bought outright opens forever, offline, with no check. If this application vanished tomorrow the file would still open in something else. The promise is a file, not a licence.
Subscribed
The house
Every school — Ecstatic Economics, Luminous Tantra, Clinical, the Developmental Canon, Leadership, Mysticism. Arranged in conversation.
The line that cannot be crossed
An entitlement check may never stop you reading. If the check cannot run — offline, server down — the page still turns. A purchase that stops working when a server is unreachable was a licence, and we promised a file.
Part II
Write to us
Tell us where to reply and, if you like, what you would want from it. There is no form to fill in beyond this, no password to choose, and nothing to confirm in your inbox.
A person reads these and a person answers them. Your address is kept to write back to you and for nothing else — it is not sold, not advertised against, and there is no third party in it. There is no tracker on this page.
Part III
The honest costs
There is no password, so there is nothing to reset. Identity in the Circle is a keypair on your device and a handle. The account arrives on a printed card, couriered — the credential never travels through any digital channel at all, because there is no path to intercept.
Your notes never leave the device. No sync, no backup, no account, by default. Which means the true cost, stated once and plainly: if you decline device sync and lose the device, the notes on it are gone. We would rather say that than hold a copy of what you underlined.
There is no unread count. No read receipts, no typing indicators, no last-seen, no presence. A single gold dot when something waits. The dot, not the badge.
The build brief sets out how the application is made. The Server sets out the machine it talks to. The Protocol sets out what may and may not be recorded. All three are published in full, so this can be judged rather than trusted.
