Some rooms settle you and some drain you, and it was never about taste

A building answers four questions at once, whether or not anyone designing it noticed.

There is a particular thing that happens in certain rooms. You come in, and before you have formed any opinion about the furniture or the address or the architect, your breathing changes. The shoulders come down a quarter of an inch. Something that was braced quietly stops bracing. It happens in old libraries, in some kitchens, occasionally in an airport gate that somebody actually thought about. It does not happen in most conference rooms, most corridors, or most of the new buildings that photograph beautifully.

The usual explanation is taste, and taste is the wrong word, because taste is supposed to vary and this varies far less than it should. Put twenty people in a badly proportioned room with a low ceiling, flat overhead light and no view, and nineteen will want to leave within the hour without being able to say why. Put the same twenty in a room with a deep windowsill, daylight that moves across the morning, and a material that takes a fingerprint, and they stay and talk longer than they meant to. Something is being done to them. The interesting question is what, and by whom.

This book's answer is that the response is not sentiment and not projection. It is a reading. The body is registering a set of relationships that the eye cannot itemise quickly enough to report: proportion against the height of a standing person, the direction light enters and what it lands on, whether the path through the space has a destination, whether the materials have any depth to look into. That reading is fast, it is largely pre-verbal, and it is usually more accurate about a building than the drawings are.

The feeling a room gives you is not your opinion of the room. It is a measurement, taken by the only instrument that was present.

What follows from that is the whole argument. If the response is a reading, then the thing being read can be named. If it can be named, it can be designed for on purpose rather than arrived at by luck. And if it can be designed for on purpose, then the question of why so much contemporary building fails at it stops being a matter of style and becomes a matter of method: an entire dimension of the problem was ruled out of the profession's vocabulary, and you cannot design well for a thing you have agreed not to discuss.

The stakes are not decorative. Research in environmental psychology consistently shows that the built environment affects mood, cognition, social behaviour, stress levels and physical health. Most people will never commission a building. Everyone arranges a room, chooses where to sit in it, and spends the overwhelming majority of their life indoors under conditions somebody else decided. Knowing what is being done to you in those rooms is not an architectural specialism. It is closer to literacy.

THE OLD ASSUMPTION

Before the word architecture existed, people were shaping space on purpose, and the earliest evidence is stranger and more sophisticated than the usual story allows. The cave paintings at Lascaux, roughly seventeen thousand years old, were not distributed at random across available wall. They sit in relation to the acoustic properties of the chambers they occupy. What was made there was not a picture gallery. It was a multisensory ritual environment, in which image, sound, movement and darkness were arranged to work on a person together.

Look at what that arrangement addresses and the pattern for everything after is already present. It addresses the body, through movement and sound. It addresses the psyche, through image and story. It addresses the community, through shared ritual. And it addresses the cosmos, through symbolic orientation. Four registers, none of them treated as separable, in the oldest surviving act of deliberate spatial design we have.

Egyptian temple architecture ran the same logic at civic scale. Structures were oriented along cosmic axes, north to south with the stars, east to west with the passage of the sun. The temple was not simply a house for a god; it was a working model of the cosmos, a place where two orders were held to interpenetrate. And the plan encoded a sequence: open courtyard giving way to increasingly enclosed and darkened rooms, ending in the inner sanctum. To walk through it was to be moved by degrees from the public and ordinary to the private and sacred. The building did the moving.

Vedic architecture, Vastu Shastra, whose earliest oral forms date to approximately 6000 BCE, mapped the human body directly onto the building plan. The Vastu Purusha Mandala, the cosmic person grid, assigned aspects of human and divine experience to specific locations within the structure. Health, prosperity, spiritual aspiration and social harmony were all treated as matters of orientation, proportion and material. Chinese geomancy, feng shui, with roots reaching to at least 4000 BCE, read the landscape itself as a living energy system and sited buildings for harmonious relationship with the flow of qi through the terrain. Mountains, rivers, wind patterns and seasonal cycles were treated as expressions of an order the building had to answer to.

The same integration appears wherever you look outside the modern West. The Pueblo kivas of the American Southwest, the longhouses of the Haudenosaunee, the round houses of sub-Saharan Africa: cosmological orientation, community function, ecological responsiveness and spiritual meaning held together in a single built form, consistently, across traditions with no contact between them.

What unites these is not a style, a technique, or a shared theology. It is an assumption: that a building participates in a larger order, that it is a node in a web of relationships rather than an object sitting on a site. And the obvious modern objection, that the cosmologies were wrong, misses what is actually at stake. Whether or not the metaphysics holds, the assumption produced buildings that people still travel across continents to sit inside, which is more than can be said for most of what replaced them. The assumption was doing work the cosmology did not have to underwrite.

THE GREEK CORRECTION

Classical Greece introduced something new and consequential: the attempt to state the principles of good building in rational terms. Vitruvius, writing in the first century BCE but drawing on centuries of Greek practice, proposed that architecture must satisfy three conditions. Firmitas, structural soundness. Utilitas, functional adequacy. Venustas, beauty. It reads like a list of nice qualities and it is not one.

The triad is an assertion that three separate domains must be held together, each capable of failing on its own terms while the others succeed. A building that is strong and ugly has failed. A building that is beautiful and falls down has failed. A building that stands, pleases the eye, and cannot be used has failed. Only the integration counts as architecture. That is the oldest written form of the argument this book is making, and it has the same structure: a refusal to accept excellence in one dimension as payment for absence in another.

The Greeks also developed an extraordinary sensitivity to proportion, and the Parthenon is the case that matters. Its columns swell slightly at the middle, a correction called entasis. The corner columns are thicker than the rest. The columns lean very slightly inward. None of this is structural necessity and none of it is decoration. It corrects for the optical distortions that perfectly straight lines produce in a human eye at that scale.

The Parthenon is not geometrically perfect. It is perfect to somebody standing in front of it, which is a harder problem and a different one.

That distinction is the whole of it. The builders were not optimising the object. They were optimising the encounter between the object and a perceiving person, and where the two disagreed, the person won. Geometry that measured correctly and looked wrong was overruled by geometry that measured oddly and looked right. This is a profoundly integral move, made two and a half thousand years before anyone drew a quadrant, and it puts the perceiving subject inside the design problem rather than outside it as a matter of opinion.

The Greek achievement also carried a seed of the difficulty that follows. Once principles are stated systematically, architecture can be practised as the application of rules, and the felt encounter that the rules were derived from can quietly drop out. The rule about entasis survives the reason for entasis. This tension between systematic understanding and lived wisdom runs through everything that comes after, and it is not resolved by picking a side. A building made only from rules is dead; a building made only from feeling falls over. The discipline is in holding both, which is difficult, which is why so few manage it.

WHAT CHARTRES DID

If any Western tradition demonstrates that full integration is achievable rather than merely desirable, it is the Gothic cathedral. Chartres, Notre-Dame, Cologne, Salisbury: these buildings were designed to work on every dimension of a person at once, and they succeed well enough that people who share none of the beliefs that built them still fall silent walking in.

Structurally, the Gothic was a genuine revolution. The pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress redistributed load away from the walls, which meant the walls could be opened. What had been structure became window. The result was interiors flooded with coloured light, and the engineering existed in order to produce that effect, which is worth saying plainly: this was load calculation in the service of transcendence.

Somatically, the cathedral shapes bodily experience with precision that most contemporary buildings never attempt. The long nave pulls the body forward in procession, so that arriving takes time and the time is part of the design. The height pulls the gaze upward, and the felt sense of self follows the gaze. The light and shadow shift continuously as you move and as the day turns, so the senses stay alert rather than settling into the low-grade numbness that uniform lighting produces in about four minutes.

Psychologically, the glass and sculpture and spatial sequence carried stories, moral instruction and a deliberate emotional range from awe through tenderness to penitence. Communally, the building was the heart of civic life, used for worship, celebration, governance and commerce, and it belonged to everyone in the town regardless of what they owned. Cosmologically, nearly every element was symbolically loaded: the cruciform plan, the altar set to the east and entrance to the west in alignment with the sun, proportions drawn from ratios understood to reflect the mathematical order of creation.

Five registers, one coherent design, no register sacrificed to another. That is the proof of possibility, and it is why this tradition sits at the root of the argument. But it also shows the limit, and the limit is the reason a new approach is needed rather than a revival. The Gothic integration was held together by a single shared religious worldview. Everyone involved, from the bishop to the glazier to the woman who walked in on a Tuesday, was operating inside broadly the same account of reality, and that account supplied the centre that all five registers hung from.

The cathedral proves the simultaneity is possible. It does not tell a plural society how to achieve it without the theology.

When that worldview fragmented over the following centuries, architecture did not become worse at engineering. It became worse at coherence, because the thing holding the dimensions together had dissolved and nothing took its place. Every partial movement since has been an attempt to rebuild a centre out of one available material: function, or form, or history, or ecology. The question this book takes up is whether a centre can be built that does not require everyone to agree about the cosmos first.

THE GREAT SEPARATION

The story from the Renaissance to the late twentieth century can be read as steadily increasing specialisation, and it is not a simple decline. The Renaissance celebrated the individual genius of the architect and the rational mastery of perspective and classical form, which produced extraordinary work. The Enlightenment extended that rationalism and separated architecture from its sacred and cosmological context, treating it as a secular functional art. The Industrial Revolution introduced iron, steel, glass and concrete, along with entirely new building types: factories, railway stations, department stores, none of which had a traditional form to inherit.

By the early twentieth century the Modernists proposed a clean break. Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and their contemporaries stripped ornament, dropped historical reference, and redesigned building from first principles for an industrial society. Le Corbusier's line about a house being a machine for living in states the ethos precisely, and the achievements were real: urgent problems of housing, sanitation and density addressed at scale, honesty of materials and structure made into a discipline, buildings of genuine clarity and formal power. At its best, in Alvar Aalto or Luis Barragán, Modernism is humane and sensorily rich, and anybody who has stood in one of those rooms knows the movement was not incapable of warmth.

But it enacted a set of separations, and naming them precisely is what makes the rest of the argument usable. Interior from exterior: how a building feels was subordinated to how it works and how it looks. Individual from collective: uniform solutions imposed on diverse communities, erasing local character and social complexity. Building from landscape: the building conceived as an autonomous object placed on the land rather than growing from it. Rational from intuitive: systematic analysis elevated over embodied knowledge, with the architect's felt sense of space treated as unserious next to a metric. Sacred from secular: any reference to the transcendent dismissed as nostalgia.

These are not aesthetic complaints. A building that ignores the interior dimension of human experience, the felt sense of a space, the need for beauty, the wish for a place to mean something, produces environments that measurably work against the people inside them. That is the part usually left out of the argument about taste, and it is the part that is not a matter of taste at all.

The reactions each recovered one thing. Postmodern architecture, in Robert Venturi, Michael Graves and Charles Moore, brought back ornament, historical reference and irony, but it treated meaning as a surface phenomenon to be quoted and collaged. It addressed the absence of meaning without restoring its presence, which is why so much of it now reads as a clever remark that has stopped being funny.

Deconstructivist architecture, in Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind, made fragmentation and disorientation into philosophical values, and at its most powerful, in Libeskind's Jewish Museum Berlin, produced spaces of shattering emotional force. As a general method it more often produced buildings that were intellectually stimulating and somatically alienating. The body was interesting to it as a subject and unwelcome in it as a guest.

Sustainable architecture and the green building movement took up the ecological dimension that Modernism had ignored, bringing energy, materials, water and ecosystem health into the centre of practice. That work is necessary and this argument depends on it. But sustainability as usually practised remains a technical and ethical framework operating on systems and measurable impacts, and it can be fully satisfied by a building that nobody wants to be in. Each movement recovered something real. None recovered everything, and none of them was structurally able to notice what it was missing, because each had inherited the vocabulary of exactly one dimension.

FOUR AT ONCE

The theoretical spine of this approach comes from Ken Wilber, the American philosopher who from the 1970s onward attempted a comprehensive map of human knowledge, and the central move is simple enough to state in a sentence. Every phenomenon can be viewed from at least four fundamental perspectives, and any account that privileges one at the expense of the others will be partial and eventually distorted. The four come from crossing two distinctions: interior against exterior, and individual against collective.

Applied to a room you are sitting in, they read like this. Upper Left is subjective experience: your thoughts, feelings, intentions, the quality of your awareness in here. Upper Right is objective and measurable: dimensions, materials, daylight factor, acoustic performance, structural behaviour, everything an instrument can register. Lower Left is intersubjective culture: the shared values, meanings, worldviews and relationships this room participates in, what a room of this kind signifies to the people who use it. Lower Right is interobjective systems: the social structures, economic arrangements, ecological networks and technologies the building is embedded in and dependent on.

Set the movements of the last century against that grid and the diagnosis is immediate. Modernism worked the Upper Right and Lower Right, the objective and the systemic, and neglected the two interiors. Postmodernism gestured at the Lower Left, at cultural meaning, but treated it as surface rather than substance. Sustainable design addresses the Lower Right primarily, with some Upper Right in building performance. Phenomenological architecture, in Juhani Pallasmaa and Peter Zumthor, addresses the Upper Left with real beauty, the sensory and embodied encounter, and sometimes underweights the systemic and collective dimensions entirely.

Every serious school of the last century was correct. Each was correct about one quadrant and silent in three.

The critical clarification, and the place where most readings of this framework go wrong, is that this is not an additive checklist with four boxes to tick. The four quadrants are dimensions of every moment of experience. They arise together, they interpenetrate, and they cannot actually be separated except in abstraction. A building is always already participating in all four. The only variable is whether it does so consciously and skilfully or unconsciously and clumsily. A room with no beauty in it still has an Upper Left effect on everyone inside; it is simply an effect nobody chose.

Take one window and run it through. Upper Right: its thermal performance, the daylight it admits, what it does to the structure around it. Upper Left: what it does to the felt sense of the room, whether it makes the space feel offered or exposed, whether the light it brings is something to sit in. Lower Left: what a window of this proportion and placement means in this culture, whether it reads as privacy, display, status, welcome, or refusal. Lower Right: the energy load it adds, the street it faces, the ecology it opens onto, the supply chain that produced the glass.

Four true accounts of the same window, none reducible to the others, all of them simultaneously in effect. Specify only the first and you get a defensible building nobody likes. Specify only the second and you get a poem that overheats. The discipline is asking all four before the drawing is finished, and the reason so few buildings survive that test is that most design processes only have professional language for two of them.

DEPTH AND STATE

The quadrants give the width of the problem. Levels give the depth, and depth is where the framework stops being a diagram and starts changing decisions. Consciousness, culture and systems all develop through stages of increasing complexity and inclusion, and three applications matter for building.

First, levels of complexity in the design itself. A building that provides shelter operates at one level. One that also optimises energy performance operates at another. One that also cultivates aesthetic experience operates at another again, and one that also fosters community and regenerates the ecology around it is at a further level still. These are not alternatives, and this is the point that gets missed. Each higher level includes the ones beneath it. A regenerative building that leaks is not a higher achievement; it has simply skipped a stage and will be judged accordingly by everyone who has to live in it in February.

Second, levels of development in the people using the building. The inhabitants of any structure vary in cognitive, emotional, moral and spiritual development, and a genuinely integral building has to be hospitable across that range. Safety and plain functionality for those whose need right now is practical. Beauty and meaning for those whose sensibilities are more developed. Depth and spaciousness for those whose awareness is most expansive. The consequence for design is uncomfortable and useful: you cannot design for one imagined ideal occupant, and a building tuned entirely to the most sophisticated reader in the room is not a sophisticated building. It is a narrow one.

Third, levels of cultural development in the community the building sits inside. A traditional village community and a cosmopolitan urban context call for different strategies, and not because one is superior. The cultural field has different characteristics, different needs, different capacities, and a design that ignores this produces the familiar spectacle of a building that is admired in journals and disliked by everyone within walking distance of it.

The framework also carries lines of development, cognitive, emotional, aesthetic, moral, kinesthetic and spiritual, and types, meaning personality styles, cultural orientations and cognitive preferences. Both add resolution. But for architecture the most immediately useful addition is states of consciousness, and this is the least understood dimension of the whole practice.

States are temporary conditions rather than stages: waking, dreaming, meditative absorption, flow, peak experience. A building can evoke them. Contemplation in a chapel, alertness in a courtroom, playfulness in a kindergarten, serenity in a garden, and each of those is produced by particular arrangements of light, proportion, material, sound and the way movement is invited or constrained. The intentional use of those qualities to invite a state is called state evocation, and it turns architecture into something closer to a contemplative technology than a container.

A room is always proposing a state. In most rooms nobody chose which one, and the occupants comply anyway.

The practical version of this is probably sitting near you. There is a room you cannot concentrate in, and the reason is not discipline. The room is proposing a state, continuously and without pause, through the light it puts on your face and the sound it fails to absorb and the thing your eye lands on when it lifts from the page. You have been treating that as a personal failing. It is a design condition, and it can be altered.

THE WORKING WORDS

A framework is only usable if it comes with terms precise enough to argue with, and this one does. AQAL, All Quadrants All Levels, is the shorthand for the full map, and in this approach it functions as a minimum standard of comprehensiveness rather than an aspiration: a design decision that ignores a quadrant or a level is incomplete and goes back. Quadrant mapping is the practice that enforces it, four questions asked of any architectural situation. What is the subjective experience of this space. What are its measurable properties. What cultural meanings does it carry. What systems does it participate in.

Level-appropriate design is the principle that buildings should meet inhabitants where they actually are developmentally, offering appropriate support and a gentle invitation to growth without imposing or overwhelming. State evocation, already described, is the intentional use of spatial qualities to invite particular states of consciousness. Both of these are ordinary craft concerns dressed in unfamiliar vocabulary, and a good architect has often been doing them for decades without a name for either.

Somatic resonance is the felt bodily response to architectural space, and it is the term that costs something to adopt. The body is treated here not as a passive recipient of spatial stimuli but as an intelligent participant in the encounter, which produces a rule with teeth: if a space does not feel right in the body, something is wrong, regardless of what the drawings say. That rule can overrule a plan that is entirely defensible on paper, which is precisely why it matters and why it is so frequently waived.

Somatic resonance is the only term here that can lose an argument for you. That is how you know it is doing work.

Ecological embeddedness names the recognition that every building sits inside a web of relationships, soil, water, air, climate, biodiversity, energy flows, and that the obligation is to honour and enhance those relationships rather than merely minimise harm. Biophilic design, drawing on E. O. Wilson's biophilia hypothesis, refers to integrating natural elements, patterns and processes into built environments, and the research consistently confirms that access to natural light, vegetation, water and natural materials has measurable positive effects on stress, productivity, healing and happiness. Regenerative design goes past sustainability, which aims to reduce damage, to architecture that actively heals and enhances the ecological and social systems it participates in. A regenerative building gives more than it takes.

Cultural resonance is a building's capacity to speak to the shared meanings, values, stories and aspirations of the community it serves, and the definition includes a warning. It is not achieved by applying stylistic motifs. Pitched roofs and local stone are not cultural resonance; they are a costume, and a community can tell the difference within about a week of moving in. Resonance comes from actually understanding the cultural field and responding to it, which takes time nobody budgets for.

Participatory process is the last term and the one with the sharpest structural consequence. The design process itself must be integral: engaging diverse stakeholders, honouring multiple ways of knowing, and sustaining genuine dialogue across difference. This is not a matter of consultation etiquette. A process that consults only engineers will produce a building that answers only engineering questions, because the questions nobody was equipped to ask do not get answered by accident. The method is visible in the walls afterwards, permanently, for everyone.

WHERE IT FAILS

A framework this comprehensive fails in characteristic ways, and the book names them rather than leaving them for the reader to discover in a finished building. The first and most common is quadrant reductionism in disguise. It is entirely possible to talk about all four quadrants while still designing from one or two, and the usual version is a sophisticated integral analysis that results in a building which is functionally competent and somatically and culturally impoverished. The analysis was real. It just never reached the drawing.

The remedy is not a better diagram, and this matters because the instinct will be to reach for one. The remedy is two questions asked in the actual room by an actual body: does this space feel alive, and does it speak to the culture it serves. Both have to be asked after the thing exists, by someone willing to be told an uncomfortable answer, which is a governance problem as much as a design one.

The second is developmental elitism. An emphasis on levels can be used to rank people, cultures and architectural traditions in ways that are condescending, colonialist, or simply factually wrong, and the history of exactly this being done is long enough that anyone using a developmental framework has a duty to know it. Level-appropriate design means meeting people where they are with respect and genuine care. It does not mean designing higher-level spaces for an imagined elite, and any application that drifts toward the second has stopped being integral in the only sense that counts.

The third is appropriation without attribution. This approach draws on Vastu Shastra, on feng shui, on indigenous building practices, on contemplative traditions from around the world. Engaging with those traditions requires humility, proper attribution, and a willingness to learn from them rather than extract from them, and the distinction is not decorative. A principle taken with its source named is scholarship. The same principle taken with the source deleted is theft with a diagram over it.

The fourth is overcomplicating the simple. The map is elaborate, and there is a standing temptation to turn every decision into a quadrant-level-line-state-type analysis, which produces meetings rather than buildings. Sometimes a window is a window that needs to let in more light. The map exists to serve clarity, and a map that is obscuring clarity has inverted its purpose and should be put down.

The fifth is neglecting mental health. Architecture affects psychological wellbeing directly, and designers working with these frameworks should be aware that spaces can trigger anxiety, disorientation and re-traumatisation, particularly in institutional, healthcare and residential settings. Where a design serves vulnerable populations, consultation with mental health professionals belongs in the process rather than in the post-occupancy review.

Above all of these sits the largest caution, and the book puts it before it puts anything else. The map is not the territory. The framework is extraordinarily useful; it reveals blind spots, it prevents reductionism, it forces multiple dimensions to be honoured. It remains a map. The territory is the living, irreducibly mysterious encounter between consciousness and matter that occurs every time a person walks into a room, and no theory fully captures that. No checklist guarantees the felt sense of belonging, aliveness and wonder that defines the buildings anybody actually loves.

ASK THE BODY

The word luminous carries a specific meaning here, and it is not atmospheric. It points to the quality of radiant clarity that appears when something is seen and held in its full complexity, without reduction, without inflation, and without fear. A luminous perspective does not avoid shadow. It does not pretend all buildings are equally good, all cultural values equally healthy, or all levels of development equally complex. It makes discernments and names what is beautiful and what is harmful. It just does so from a stance of fundamental reverence, on the grounds that the impulse to build shelter and beauty and meaning is itself an expression of something worth respecting in people.

That produces four commitments. The approach is embodied rather than merely theoretical: practised with the whole self, including the body's intelligence, the heart's sensitivity and the contemplative depth of sustained attention, because quadrant maps are useful and are not sufficient. It is appreciative rather than merely critical: Modernism's honesty, Postmodernism's playfulness, sustainability's ecological conscience and phenomenology's sensory richness are honoured and included rather than dismissed on the way past.

It is ethically grounded, and this one has content. It takes seriously the question of power: who designs, who decides, who is included, who is displaced, who profits, who suffers. No architecture is integral if it is produced through exploitative labour, built on stolen land, or designed to serve only the wealthy. That is not an addendum to the framework, and a practice that keeps the diagrams and drops this clause has kept the decoration and thrown away the argument. And it is spiritually open without being religiously prescriptive: the same principles inform a meditation hall, a mosque, a synagogue, a secular community centre, or a house, and none of them is required to hold the others' beliefs.

For a reader who will never commission anything, the whole argument reduces to one practice, and it can be done in whatever room you are in now. Sit or stand comfortably. Close your eyes and take three slow breaths. Then open your eyes softly, not focusing on any particular object, allowing the whole space to enter your awareness at once. Notice the quality of light. The temperature of the air. The sounds present and the sounds absent. The textures visible and felt.

Then ask the body how the space feels, which is a different question from what you think about it and will get a different answer. Where does the body relax. Where does it tighten. Does the space invite you to stay, or to leave. Does it energise or soothe. Take the first response rather than the considered one, because the considered one has already started negotiating.

That felt-body response is the most reliable guide to architectural quality available to anyone, and it cannot be produced by a checklist or an analysis. Once it is switched on, buildings start speaking in their own language, which is light, proportion, material and breath, and a good deal of the built world becomes legible in a way that is occasionally uncomfortable and permanently useful.

Three questions close the argument, and they are worth carrying out of it. Think of a building that has genuinely affected you, and work out which quadrants it engaged. Consider the space you are in right now, and ask what it communicates about values and priorities, what it addresses well, and what it neglects. Then ask where the same fragmentations show up in your own life: where you have separated the practical from the beautiful, the individual from the collective, the ecological from the spiritual, and what it would look like to begin closing those gaps.
