Licensing · for machines and the people who run them

The library, licensed for machines

Anybody may find, read, quote and link these books. A machine that trains on them, or resells a crawl of them, licenses them. This page says how.

The public library, counted from its own library.json, built 7 October 2026. The wider corpus, more than a thousand works, is licensed by enquiry.

Three ways in

Per crawl

Through Cloudflare

Cloudflare's Pay per crawl charges a registered crawler for each page it fetches, and Cloudflare is the merchant of record. Applied for on 7 October 2026; it opens when Cloudflare admits the zone to its closed beta, and until then this route is by enquiry.

Per book

By x402

x402 is an open payment standard built on HTTP 402. A crawler that speaks it pays in USDC on Base and is served the book it paid for. $111 a book, in USDC on Base, paid to 0x308d720d50d6e7fa4a68cd75bb33105ab5f7c935. The 402 for any page of a book carries the request; a crawler answers it, is served the page with a receipt and a grant token, and every chapter of that book is then served for 365 days with nothing further to pay. Another book is another $111.

The whole corpus

By licence

$5,000 a title for 3 years, for training across the library and the wider corpus. Non-exclusive; per title; output limited to 200 consecutive words or 5% of a book; no training on pirated copies; titles listed in the licence. Write below, or call.

What stays open

Search engines, and the answer engines that fetch a page for a person, read the first chapter of every book exactly as before. A person reads chapter one with no account, and the whole library with a free one. Nothing on this page changes that.

What a crawler receives

The machines named below are answered 402 Payment Required, on every page of the library and the shelf.

x-refused
The agent's own name, as matched.
Link
rel="license" to this page, and rel="describedby" to the terms as JSON.
The body
These terms as plain text, or as JSON when the request sends Accept: application/json.
x402
A PAYMENT-REQUIRED header, x402 version 2. Answer it with PAYMENT-SIGNATURE; the page returns with PAYMENT-RESPONSE. The grant comes back in X-Crawl-Grant; send it as the same header on every later request for that book. A payment that does not settle withholds the page and takes nothing.
