18 surfaces — the page, the margin, the spine, the Journal, the correspondence, the room, the wrist, the desk and the television — built from The Reader — A Build Brief and photographed from the running code.
Not mockups. Every image is the app's own SwiftUI put through ImageRenderer at 2×. Eighteen tests green. macOS and iOS both building.

Part II · III — the page, the margin, the spine
The page, and the margin beside itThe working mode. The marks sit beside the lines that earned them, and the seven pens run along the foot with the chosen one held in gold. The margin closed, and the spine reportingVespers. One dot per mark, each in its own pen — it says what is marked without opening anything, and it is also the handle. The seven pensRose · Amber · Sage · Sky · Violet · Clay · Ink. Radius zero, hairline bordered. The meaning is always beside it.The seven, after dark26% tints of the same hue rather than different colours, so a reader's coding survives the hour. The marginPen as a square, the fragment in italic, the note beneath at reading size. The third is an orphan — its passage was revised, and it says so.The margin, after dark
The Journal
Part IV — one book, five provenances
The JournalSearch is a serif at 24px. Filters compose: pen, kind, source — so everything marked Sky in the economics books is two taps. The Journal, after darkCompare the pen dots with the light version. Same hue, different treatment.
The Channel
Part VI — messages, the room, the session
Messages, set as writingNo bubbles, no receipts, no typing indicator, no read state. A message carries a passage: this paragraph, and what I think about it, to one person. A gold dot where others put a number. The same correspondence, after darkThe RoomThree controls. The line names the machine the call is on and the key it verified — the architecture shown rather than asserted. The door to a sessionOne line, her timezone, no link to lose. Ninety minutes, and no clock counting down. The nine-month arcStated in months, never a percentage. Progressively emptier by intention.
Five surfaces
Part VII — one library, five hands
Apple TV — listening at ten feetThe cover large, the title, the chapter, the tide and the progress arc. Nothing below 32pt, because nobody is closer than two metres. Hold the remote and the sentence is flagged into the Journal.Apple TV — the circleThe other reason the television exists: eleven faces at conversational size on the largest screen in the house. First names only, and only inside the room — no directory, no way to enumerate the membership from outside it.macOS — the Journal as a workspaceThe reason the desk matters. Multi-select, bulk re-pen, and a curated ledger rather than the whole book. Digits 1–7 lay the pens — the fastest marking interface on any surface.Apple Watch — listening, and the flagThe tide is eight bars, not eighteen, because at 40mm the rest is noise. A firm press drops a return-to-this at the current sentence: no pen, no colour, an Ink mark waiting in the Journal. She was walking, something landed, and now it is not lost. The same wrist, at noon
