The Edition

What an edition means here

An edition is not a version. A version implies the last one was wrong. An edition is a reading that happened on a date, by a reader, under terms — and it stays exactly as it was even when the corpus moves on without it.

This one is fixed to 20 August 2026. Every number in it was true at that hour and some of them are already false, which is the point: a record you can amend was never a record. The corpus has grown since. The reading has not. If you want to know what the books said on the day they were first read straight through, this is the only document that can tell you, and it will still be able to in thirty years.

What this document is

On 20 August 2026 the corpus was read for the first time — not sampled, not summarised, read. Two hundred and nineteen volumes were hashed and anchored. Four were read from first line to last by a reader whose only instruction was to find what was good, find what was wrong, and hand back the repair alongside every fault.

This is what came out. It is organised in two halves, because the findings fall into two kinds and they are not equally valuable.

The general findings are things true of the corpus rather than of any book in it. They were invisible from inside a single volume and they are, without exception, worth more than anything found in one. A structure held across thirty-three books. A vocabulary of four hundred and seventy-six named instruments. A pattern in the references that repeats with such regularity that it is plainly a property of the writing process rather than of any particular chapter.

The per-book findings are what four specific books turned out to contain: their best pages, their worst arithmetic, and what each is worth. Each book links to its own record, where the full reading, the citation audit, the intellectual-property report and the three valuations sit in files anyone can open.

Then a section of atoms — the corpus broken into pieces small enough to leave it — and a closing section on what a further reading would find, which is the only part of this document that is speculation and says so.

The findings that no single book could have contained

The most valuable thing a reader can find in a body of work is something the author did not know was there. Not a mistake — mistakes are cheap, and any competent reader turns up a hundred of them before lunch. What is expensive is structure: a shape the writing kept making because the mind behind it kept making that shape, held so consistently across so many volumes that it stopped being a choice and became a signature.

That is what this section contains, and it is the reason the general findings are listed before the per-book ones rather than after. A fault in Chapter Nine of one volume costs an afternoon to repair. An architecture executed four hundred and ten times without ever being named costs nothing to repair and is worth a great deal to own, because the moment it has a name it can be licensed, taught, and defended.

Nobody sets out to invent a method four hundred and ten times. You invent it once and then forget you did.

Four of the six findings below are of that kind — properties of the process rather than the page. One is an embarrassment that took nine seconds to fix and had survived thirty-three books. And one is arithmetic that, corrected, reverses the conclusion of the paragraph containing it, which is the sort of thing that is worth catching before a reviewer does.

The first reader found it in one book and called it a chapter architecture. Measured against the corpus it is not one book's habit — it is thirty-three volumes out of thirty-three. Each of the eight repeating movements appears between four hundred and four hundred and ten times: one per chapter, across every volume, with no volume skipping a movement and none adding a tenth.

The word counts are the most persuasive number on the page. They were never specified anywhere — they are simply what the movements came out at, over and over, across a decade. A structure that reproduces its own proportions without a rule telling it to is not a template being followed. It is a practice that has stabilised.

Why this matters more than any book. A method demonstrated once is a structure. A method held four hundred and ten times at consistent length, by one author, is an instrument — and an instrument is a thing that can be specified, taught, certified and licensed. A book cannot be any of those.

It is also, unmistakably, a course specification rather than a book structure. The seventh movement is Reflection Prompts: questions the reader answers about their own situation. That is an assessment layer. A chapter that ends in a question the reader answers about themselves has assessed them without testing them — which is the hardest thing to build into a curriculum and it is already built into four hundred and ten chapters.

The specification now exists as its own document, dated, hashed and anchored: THE-NINE-TURNS.md. It proves when the architecture was written down. It makes no claim about when it was invented, because that would be a claim the record cannot support.

2 · Four hundred and seventy-six named instruments

Every trademarked name in every stamped manuscript was extracted in a single pass — 476 distinct marks, after merging surface variants, from 219 books.

They were ranked by diffusion before usage — how many separate books a mark appears in, before how often it is used — and that ordering is the whole finding. A framework used three hundred times inside one book is a chapter. A framework used twenty times across seven books is a spine, because independent development across separate works is evidence of reproducibility that no single book can supply.

Twenty-six marks appear in three or more books. Those are the portfolio-level instruments — the ones a licensing conversation is actually about.

Twenty-six more are what the register calls deep instruments: used fifteen or more times inside a single volume. Fully worked, and completely invisible from outside the corpus, because finding one requires reading a particular book to the end.

A framework used two hundred and two times in one book is not a mention. It is a method that has been fully developed and then left where it was developed.

3 · Where the marks are — and the collection that has none

The distribution is the second general finding, and it is sharper than the count.

The economics collection contains no trademarked names at all. One and a half million words, thirty-three volumes, an architecture reproduced four hundred and ten times — and nothing in it is named.

This is not an absence of intellectual property. It is intellectual property that has not been made nameable, which is a different problem with a much cheaper fix. Every one of the four books read produced at least one framework that had been fully developed and never given a name:

  • The Nine Turns™ — the architecture itself, thirty-three volumes deep
  • The Livingness Test™ — a five-criterion framework buried in chapter 11 of one book
  • The Punctuated Carrying-Capacity Model™ — formalised with two equations in another
  • The Trophic Market Map™ and the Decomposer Tier™ — a third trophic role in market ecology that no existing business-ecosystem framework has
  • The Spelled-Out Method™, the Payoff-Editing Theory of Institutions, the Six-Step Selection Audit, the Fund/Firm/Pocket Ladder

The rule that produced all of them, now written into the reading standard: an unnamed framework is an unownable one. Naming is the single cheapest value a reading pass can add to a manuscript, and in a collection with four hundred and ten chapters and zero names, it is the highest-multiple work available.

4 · A pattern in the references

Across four independent readings, the same shape appeared each time and it is regular enough to be a property of the process rather than of any book.

The characteristic failure is not a wrong page number. It is one real author carrying several incompatible works. Kirman appears eight ways in one book and none of them is correct; the real paper is a single 1993 Quarterly Journal of Economics article. Beinhocker appears with four titles across five chapters, none of which is his actual book, and one of which assigns Stephan Haeckel's Adaptive Enterprise to him by name. Colander appears three times with articles that can be disproved by enumerating the contents of the issues they claim to occupy.

Beside that sits a second, quieter failure: the load-bearing source that is never cited at all. Kahneman and Tversky, absent while loss aversion does work in three chapters. Gould and Eldredge, absent while punctuated equilibrium structures an entire chapter. Taleb, named seventeen times in the prose of one book and present in none of its thirteen reference lists. Verhulst, whose equation is derived in every volume of the collection and who is not named anywhere in it.

A distinction that has to be made, and made carefully

A reference that does not resolve is a mistake. It is not a fabrication. Fabrication asserts intent to deceive, and no reading pass is in a position to know intent — least of all in a record that will be read by an IP valuator. The correct language is unresolvable reference, no matching record found, an error of record. Describe the file, never the person. When that language was corrected across every reading document, not one finding changed by a word — which is the proof that the accusatory version was never doing any work.

What matters practically is that every held reference in all four books now has a resolved real substitute with a DOI checked against Crossref by title and author before use. This is the cheapest large repair in the corpus: a class of defect that looks catastrophic and is, in fact, find-and-replace.

5 · Arithmetic that reverses a conclusion

Every book read contained worked examples whose numbers were wrong, and in each book at least one of them inverted the recommendation the chapter was making.

  • A chapter stating that $6,800 exceeds $11,000 and recommending an investment on that basis. Repaired, the bond wins at $11,041 against $10,285 — and the correct reasoning, that a thirty per cent chance of ruin is not a thirty per cent haircut, is the best economics in the chapter.
  • A chaos demonstration run at r = 3.2, where the two orbits provably converge — they agree to 1.4 × 10⁻⁷ by the sixth step. Repaired to r = 3.9 with real divergence figures, and the reason the original was false written out as the counter-proof.
  • A fishery model that never subtracts the catch. A platform put at 500,000 users in month six when its own equation gives 332. An ROI that inverts a profit into a loss. A Human Development Index block with five errors in seven lines.
  • And, in one book, negative feedback defined as the amplifying loop in twelve places across seven chapters — once inside its own definition. Anybody learning feedback from that chapter learns it backwards.

These matter disproportionately because The Math — Spelled Out is the series' registrable promise. A promise to show the arithmetic is broken more severely by wrong arithmetic than by no arithmetic at all.

All of them are now repaired, recomputed independently against the printed file rather than the repair plan, and stamped as second editions with their own Bitcoin anchors. Every witnessed first edition is byte-identical to what it was. The first edition says when the work existed; the newest says what is being read today.

6 · The series misspelled its own section name

A small finding with a disproportionate consequence. The Math — Spelled Out appeared as Spilled nine times across seven volumes.

In an ordinary book that is a typo. In this collection it is a defect in the asset itself: the consistency of the eight movements is exactly what makes the architecture legible as a specification rather than a habit, and a movement that is spelled two ways in seven volumes is not consistent. It was repaired corpus-wide in one pass, with a new stamped edition wherever it landed and every first edition left carrying the original text.

Part Two · The four books

Read from first line to last, and what each turned out to be worth

Four books were read the way books are supposed to be read and almost never are: from the first line to the last, in order, once, without skipping to the interesting part. This is a slower and more humiliating exercise than sampling, because sampling lets a reader admire a body of work while reading almost none of it, and reading straight through does not.

What straight-through reading produces is a judgement rather than an impression. Each of the four below has a verdict attached — what its best pages actually are, where its arithmetic breaks, and a number for what it is worth. The numbers vary by a factor of several, which is itself a finding: the volumes are not of even quality and pretending otherwise would make every other number in this document less believable.

A reader who likes everything has told you nothing. The verdicts here disagree with each other on purpose.

Each title links to its own record — the full reading, the citation audit, the intellectual-property report, the three valuations — in files that open without asking anyone's permission.

Each was read from first line to last. Each has a folder in the provenance record containing the manuscript byte for byte, its SHA-256, an OpenTimestamps receipt anchored to Bitcoin, an attestation of authorship, and four documents: the reading, the citation audit, the intellectual-property report and the tasting with three valuations.

Economic Systems as Living Systems

What is best in it. Chapter 11's expected-value walk-through, correct in every particular, and closing on the line that separates a teacher from a salesman: "Importantly, this doesn't guarantee a profit of $15 per share." Four other passages are marked by line as must-survive-any-edit.

What was found. One hundred and thirty-five discrete defects, each asserted to match exactly once before repair. Eleven worked figures wrong — the deer population off by a factor of three, a price printed at $1,300 where $1,580 belongs, a weighted return at 7.8% where it should read 7.95%, a portfolio at 17.9% in bold where the arithmetic gives 16.9%. A matrix that did not multiply to the vector printed beneath it. Negative feedback inverted in twelve places, two of which the first reading missed and the repair found by grepping rather than trusting the count.

What was named. The Livingness Test™ — a five-criterion framework sitting unnamed in chapter 11. It now appears at its first use in chapter 8 with four criteria and again in chapter 11 with five, so it reads as a spine rather than a buried list. The Living Ledger, promised in chapter 1, is now named in all thirteen Operationalize sections: the promise kept rather than assumed.

Twenty-five attributions added, named in the prose rather than filed at the back, because the book uses no in-text citations: Verhulst, Lotka–Volterra, Leontief, Hawkins–Simon, Markowitz, Dantzig, Cobb–Douglas, Smith, Taleb, von Neumann–Morgenstern, and fifteen more.

Worth. As it stood: $2,000–$10,500. Repaired: $45,000–$305,000, central around $122,000. The whole spread is one editorial pass and one autociter run — and the reason is the third valuation line, not the first.

The book is not the asset. The curriculum inside it is, by about five times — thirteen modules, seventy-six discussion prompts, thirteen protocols, sixteen worked examples. It is a course that was printed as a book. And that line is the one the errors destroy completely rather than merely discount, which is why it priced at exactly zero before the repair.

Complexity in Economic Theory

What is best in it. The prose. Bart and the bees in chapter 3, Priya's grandmother in chapter 12, the Great Widget Fiasco in chapter 10 — all three marked do-not-touch, and all three survived the repair verbatim.

What was found. Seventy-eight repairs. The chaos demonstration at r = 3.2 was the most interesting error in the corpus, because it is not an arithmetic slip: the parameter simply does not produce the phenomenon the chapter is demonstrating. The repair moved it to r = 3.9 with recomputed orbits and real divergence figures, added a sentence separating the logistic map from the logistic equation, and then wrote out the counter-proof — the two orbits at r = 3.2 agreeing to seven decimal places by the sixth step — so the error becomes the lesson.

The Human Development Index block was rebuilt on the UNDP's actual two-sub-index education method, with a closing paragraph on why the mean is geometric. Kirman's eight incompatible entries collapse to one real paper. Twelve unsourced claims were given sources, eight of them named in the prose where the debt is incurred.

The redundancy, and what to do with it. The logistic equation was derived from scratch in seven chapters. The repair does not delete six of them — it derives the equation in full once, in chapter 1, and has each later chapter open with a two-line callback that adds one idea specific to that chapter. Every worked example survives. The single most-criticised property of the book becomes a feature of a course where each module stands alone.

Beyond the brief: a consolidated Works Cited, ninety-five entries, alphabetical, DOIs printed exactly as the APIs returned them — so the deposit gate checks one canonical list instead of thirteen.

Evolutionary Economics

What is best in it. The Spelled-Out discipline itself, at its most complete: every equation glossed term by term in plain English, then fully substituted with the arithmetic on the page, so a reader with school-level mathematics can follow all thirteen chapters. No other book in evolutionary economics is readable that way. Chapter 5's Omar-and-Fatima opening is the best single page in the four books, and came through the repair word for word.

What was found. The largest citation problem — one hundred and eighteen entries, fifteen unresolvable, eight of them with no matching record in Crossref at all, disproved by enumerating the full contents of the issues they claim to occupy. Every one now carries a real substitute whose DOI was fetched and title-matched before use. All fifty-six DOIs in the finished file resolve.

Two formal models could not produce the results their text claimed. Hawk-Dove was rebuilt at C = 20; the two-firm competition model was replaced with a replicator formulation that reuses the book's own equation — and notably, the reader's first proposed fix for it was itself degenerate, caught by the reader and replaced. That self-catch is worth more than the fix.

Worth. $8,000–$86,000 standalone, $32,000–$75,000 as a member of the corpus, $60,000–$395,000 as licensable intellectual property — the same five-to-one ratio that appears in every one of the four books.

Markets as Ecosystems

What is best in it — and this is the finding of the four. A throwaway line in chapter 3 names decomposers as a role in market ecology. Existing business-ecosystem frameworks have producers and consumers. They do not have a third trophic role for the firms that break down failed ventures and return their components — talent, code, customers, premises — to circulation.

The reading proposes the Decomposer Tier™ and the Trophic Market Map™, and writes the five-role instrument out in full. Chapter 2's record-player story turns out to be that same thesis delivered as an image, one chapter early and unconnected to it.

That is what a full reading buys that no summary can: a category that exists nowhere else in the field, sitting in a subordinate clause, one chapter away from the image that proves it.

What was found. Eight of roughly twenty-five worked calculations fail. A fishery model that never subtracts the catch. An ROI that inverts profit into loss. A platform at 500,000 users in month six when the equation gives 332. Five references attribute a real work to the wrong person — and three of the five are already correct elsewhere in the same manuscript, which makes them find-and-replace rather than research.

The corpus broken into pieces small enough to leave it

Eleven million words is not a product. It is a quantity, and quantities do not move — they sit in a folder being impressive to nobody. What moves is a piece small enough to be handed to someone in a form they can use before they have finished deciding whether they trust you.

So the corpus was broken down. Not summarised — broken, into named classes of thing that can each stand alone: a Signal, an Orientation, a Framework, a Practice, an Assessment, a Testimony, a Product. Each class has a shape, a length, and a job. Each one is extractable without its parent volume, and each one, extracted, is still complete.

The atom is the unit of trust. Nobody buys eleven million words. They try one paragraph and decide about the rest.

What follows is the vocabulary, with a specimen of each. Read them as a parts list rather than an argument — this is the section that explains how everything else in the catalogue is going to reach anybody at all.

Verhulst's logistic equation is not the contribution. The treatment is: every term named in plain language before the symbols appear, then a numerical walk-through, then the limit behaviour. Cite as a pedagogical method with four hundred instances, not as a result.

Part Four · What else a reading would find

Speculation, labelled as such, about the two hundred and fifteen unread

Four books were read. Two hundred and fifteen were not. Everything in this section is therefore an inference from a sample, and it is being flagged that way at the top rather than buried in a footnote, because the most common way a document like this loses its authority is by letting a guess sit in the same typeface as a measurement.

That said, the inferences are not idle. Four books out of two hundred and nineteen is a small sample, but the four were not chosen for convenience, and the structure they share turned out to hold across every one of the thirty-three volumes whose tables of contents were checked afterwards. When a pattern survives that test it is usually a property of the writer rather than of the sample.

The honest form of a prediction is a price. What it would cost to know is the last thing in this section, and it is the only number here that is not a guess.

What follows: the twenty-nine volumes of the same architecture, the four defect classes that a single pass could fix everywhere at once, the two collections where the naming already happens correctly, and — at the end — what a full reading would actually cost, stated plainly, so the speculation can be converted into fact by anyone willing to pay for it.

This section is the only speculation in the document, and it is marked as such. Four books of two hundred and nineteen have been read. What follows is what the shape of those four suggests is waiting in the rest — stated as expectations that can be checked, not as findings.

Twenty-nine more volumes of the same architecture

Twenty-nine of the thirty-three economics volumes are unread. The four that were read produced, between them, six named frameworks that had never been named. If that rate holds — and there is no reason yet to think it does not — the collection contains something on the order of forty unnamed instruments, each fully developed, each currently unownable.

That is the single highest-value expectation in this document, and it is cheap to test: read one more volume and count.

The same four defect classes, and a way to fix them at once

Every book read had the same four: an unresolvable-reference cluster around one or two real authors; at least one conclusion-reversing arithmetic error; at least one load-bearing source used but never cited; and a section-level redundancy inherited from the architecture. That regularity is itself the finding — they are properties of the writing process, not of the books.

Which means they can be attacked corpus-wide rather than book by book. A single deduplicated reference audit across all thirty-three volumes would resolve each unique source once and apply it everywhere, instead of thirty-three separate resolutions of the same Verhulst.

The Developmental Canon, where the naming already happens

Four hundred and fifty-five of the four hundred and seventy-six marks live in the Developmental Canon, and not one of its volumes has been read. The register can say a mark exists and how often; it cannot say whether the framework behind it is fully worked, half-worked, or a name attached to a paragraph. Only reading distinguishes an instrument from a label, and that distinction is exactly what a valuation turns on.

The expectation: the twenty-six deep instruments are real and under-specified. Somatic-Parts Integration™ used two hundred and two times in one volume is almost certainly a complete method that has never been extracted from the book it was developed in.

The Luminous Hundred, and its one gate

Ninety-four finished volumes, no named frameworks, and 2,852 unresolved citation markers across ninety-nine of its hundred files. Nothing in it can be deposited or sold until those are resolved — and the resolution is not a rewrite, it is a verification pass with a real substitute for each.

Until then the collection is listed, playable and unbuyable, which is the correct state.

What only a reading can find

The four readings each surfaced one thing no extraction, index or search could have produced:

  • A subordinate clause naming a market role the field does not have.
  • A parameter that does not produce the phenomenon its chapter is demonstrating — visible only to somebody who ran the orbit.
  • A five-criterion framework with no name, four criteria in one chapter and five in another.
  • A line that separates a teacher from a salesman, worth protecting through any edit.

None of those is findable by grep. Each was found by somebody reading to the end. That is the argument for reading the other two hundred and fifteen, and it is the only argument this document makes that is not already proven.

What it would cost to know

Each reading produced four documents, a repair plan with every fault carrying its fix, and a second edition — hashed, anchored, and shipped. Four books took one day. The remaining twenty-nine economics volumes are a week of the same work; the full two hundred and nineteen, at that rate and in parallel, is a month.

Set against that: forty expected unnamed instruments in one collection, the Developmental Canon's twenty-six deep methods extracted from the books they are buried in, and a corpus-wide reference audit that resolves each source once instead of two hundred and nineteen times.
